Winter Sun Warms

On a cold winter day it is nice to have a home oriented and the trellis angled to allow the low winter sun to permeate the interior space, raking across the floors, climbing up the walls, and bouncing off the ceiling. Architect Joshua Nimmo designed the home to shield the sun in the summer and accentuate the sun in the winter.

Dallas Colors

Buildings have architectural fingerprints of their era. Downtown buildings also often have the colors of the era. Brownstone was dominant in the early 20th century. The 1970s gold reflective glass of the twin towers on Central Expressway foreshadowed the glitz of the 1980s. Architect Philip Johnson chose pink granite for Momentum Place in 1987. Mid century colors on prominent downtown buildings remind us of an era when Dallas was emerging as a nationally known city with optimistic plans for the future. Fifty years of success gives Dallas greater credibility and more vulnerability to big city entitlement. The opening of the AIA Dallas Chapter AD EX returns an architectural focus to what was once, in the mid century, the architectural epicenter of Dallas. #architecture #architect #dallas #downtown #midcentury #midcenturyskyscraper #modern

Japanese Maple Chorus

In Dallas we rely on a chorus of Japanese maples to fill the sky or at least the garden with autumn red. These understory trees with their showy and brilliant reds steal the show from the towering pecans and other large canopy trees in Munger Place. How much nicer to have this underlayer of color across the backyard than the cold, drab gray of concrete for ADU parking or a backyard rental house itself. Happy Thanksgiving!

Analogue Intimacy

Memory or mystery—transistor radios, mechanical rolodexes, princess dial phones, 1950s yellow, mid-century modern living, or confusing mechanical contraptions? Paul Sokal with beautiful enlarged photographs revisits an analogue era that empowered the individual without losing the intimacy of interactions. Even the physicality of dialing on a fixed phone and one having to move to a fixed phone to answer or miss the call connotes a more purposed connection.

Still Life Instills Action

Paul Sokal’s photographs at PDNB Gallery are either a nostalgic reminder of a personal and more intimate era of play and personal communication, or a look at a great unknown of the past depending on when you were born. What is known is when strong photographs are in a delightful space, even still lifes prompt action. This Design District gallery is too small to say the crowd went wild, but one could say the work animated those in attendance. Photographer Paul Sokal, also known for his dramatic cityscapes, is in the background.

Autumn Reserve

Search for fall this wet season in Dallas is even a tougher search than finding good modern homes among the hundreds of builder production homes. A visit to the Urban Reserve neighborhood yields both 50 architect designed homes and a touch of fall color in the natural landscape of Urban Reserve designed by landscape architect Kevin Sloan.

Sleek Historicity

This casual photograph illustrates how a historic home can inspire finishes that convey the architectural aesthetic of the house and still be sleek, handcrafted, and lush. Architects Ted Larson and Paul Pedigo designed this newel post that was then crafted in the shop of contractor Randy Clowdus. The wide plank floors and ceilings are another example that reflect the era and convey 21st century refinement. The Venetian plaster finish also draws from tradition and current design.

Dusk, Damp, Dallas

Dallas is a city associated with sunshine, smiles, and optimism. The historic rains this fall have transformed the city into one of contemplative and melancholy vignettes. Well into autumn, a green, moist landscape still prevails. It is not the weather people move to Dallas for, but it gives the friendly, frenetic nature of the city a respite. Nature itself becomes the dominant theme.
