Small Home – Lives Big

The floor plan of this small modern home designed by Seattle architect Ryan Grey Smith conveys a commodious space. Accentuating the openness of this contemporary home are the six outdoor living spaces. Almost every room opens into an outdoor room or looks into several outdoor spaces: the terraced lawn, the modern terrace with a curved hedgerow wall, the upper terrace with a more expansive view of the park and meadow, the open atrium terraced dining area, the swimming pool and terrace shielded by a half wall, and a sitting area on the rear terrace. Maybe my favorite detached office is found at the end of the footbridge at the rear of the home. This office is less than 100 sf but with a wall of glass that provides sunlight and views of the garden, and the intimacy of a small quiet office.

Machine Propels Art

Cult of the Machine: Precisionism and American Art at the DMA is a fascinating reminder that architecture, art, and design are shaped by the technology and culture of our time. Even artist Georgia O’Keefe’s work shown here is stark, simple, colorless, and angled shapes versus the flowers and free forms of the desert of which she is more closely associated. The architecture and art of overlapping eras is at its best when it reflects its time and is timeless.

Modern Perch Over Park

“It is not how much land your home is on, it is what you are next to or across from.” This is something I stressed in my TEDx talk, Homes That Make Us Happy. It is also something I always emphasize to my clients that I represent who are looking for the perfect home. This small architect-designed modern home is a great example. First on a winding hill, it has expansive views of rolling topography, flowering meadows, and trails passing through forests. While one will seldom see a car go by, bikes are a familiar sight either on the road or on the upper or lower bike paths in the distance.

Modern Terrace

This contemporary porch is the architectural introduction to this modern home.
The front porches of Munger Place are my favorite architectural element of that neighborhood. The formal terraces of historic homes like the Crespi Estate are my favorite architectural element of those homes. Balconies on townhouses are the architectural attraction in denser neighborhoods. This modern terrace captivates me with its curved garden wall that provides privacy as friends enjoy each other and the fire pit. This terrace is also just steps away from the running and biking paths that give this natural White Rock Lake park a physical vibrancy.

White Rock – More than Lake

White Rock Lake is the centerpiece of White Rock but just one of its attractions. The forest, meadows, lagoons, and multiple paths through the park that connect the lake add to the enjoyment of visitors, or even better, living in the White Rock Lake Peninsula neighborhood. East Lake Highlands Drive is a quiet neighborhood street that is the chosen path of cyclists and is only a short walking distance from the Cultural Center, Bath House theater, and myriad entertainment spaces around the lake. This part of the Peninsula neighborhood might have the most extended views of rolling meadows and woods in Dallas.

Steps from White Rock

There are many dimensions of White Rock Lake. There are estate homes on West Lawther overlooking the lake. There are modern homes on East Lake Highlands on the other side of the lake overlooking the park and forest. These modern homes on smaller East Lake Highland lots are a good example of how it is not as important how much land a home is on as what the home is across from. Here a homeowner has endless views of the park, paths and forest and still is just steps away from White Rock Lake. There are reasons cyclists leave the bike path along the lake to ride up into the Peninsula neighborhood along the park before they descend back to the lake. East Lake Highlands Drive is a quiet, hilly, tree-lined street capturing breezes and providing beautiful views of nature.

A Room with a Curve

Backyard tree was saved, rooms with views created.
This large modern home, pool, and stone garden wall gently curve around a splendid red oak. Walls of glass with layers of brise-soleil allow the delightful view of clear water, green trees, and blue sky. Architect Lionel Morrison designed the steel frame structure and predominantly glass courtyard façade to be light and open and emphasize an engaging view from every room.

Joy – Visual Vignettes

Homes are the foundation of our environment that makes us happy. Vignettes of joy can be created, acquired, and visually accumulated. Ingrid Fetell Lee, in her book, Joyful, illuminates a joyful presence that surrounds us every day. What might begin for some as a scavenger hunt for joy sighting quickly becomes a treasure hunt of joy with unlimited treasure. One’s eye becomes accustomed to cut through the bleak and cluttered to jump from one joyful image to another. I hosted Ingrid at the TED Conference where she gave the final talk to a standing ovation and much excitement about her upcoming book, now just released. My further observation is that the common denominator of my friends and clients, besides being smart, insightful, curious, and aesthetically inspired, is that they all create joy. Keep creating joy!

Artist makes an impact

David Bates current show at Talley Dunn Gallery reminded me of what an impact an artist can have on a home. Dallas has so many great artists that impact homes and contribute to the architectural landscape of the city. These artists not only create art work but their art encourages people to think about design, space, construction, and the aesthetics of an environment. It is remarkable how many of my clients have David Bates paintings and sculptures in their architecturally significant homes. This David Bates constructed and painted self-portrait reflects both David and encourages an appreciation of good architecture. #davidbates @talleydunngallery @talley.dunn #art #flowers #painting #gallery #dallas #pathtotrinitygroves #architecture #homes #impact #selfportrait #Design #show #artist #highlandpark #prestonhollow #greenwayparks #universitypark #mungerplace #bluffview #downtown #turtlecreek #architecturallysignificanthomes
Labor Day Celebrates Craftsmen

As technology and artificial intelligence is replacing labor, it is fun to think about the era of homes that make up many of our conservation and historic districts. Labor Day was officially made a national holiday in 1894 when many of the grandest Victorian mansions were built on Ross Avenue. This is also right before the mansions of Swiss Avenue and the other homes that are now in protected architecturally important neighborhoods. The Labor movement today is maybe not as relevant as workers are not characteristically working seven long 12-hour days a week for little money and no benefits. However, the turn of the 20th century was not only an era of hardship but an era of craftsmen. Talented artisans knew how to design, create, and build. Before CAD drawings on computers and computerized renderings and construction drawings, one can see calculations for this early construction on uncovered boards and beams of an old house. One can also see the markings of hand-hammered iron and hand-planed and hammered wood. Labor Day for me is a time to celebrate the skill and artistry of the laborers from 100 years ago. #architecture #architect #foosheeandcheek #historic #conservationdistrict #greenwayparks #homesthatmakeushappy #dallas #laborday #porch #neighborhood #greenway #artisan #craftsmen #design #flag #architecturallysignificant #architecturallysignificanthomes
