Private Library Enriches Civilization
Just as art museums are often created or sustained by the donations of private art collections, great public libraries are often the result of private libraries. Private collectors often have more leeway and in some cases more continuity in their library collections because of the single-minded focus and determination of the individual collectors. Here, a sophisticated collector has created a library of international importance. This private residential library had to have all of the technical and environmental components of a major public library. When a library is classical, the collection of books and artifacts accessible, and the space prominent, it gives the collection a mystique and intimacy with those visiting or viewing the material. Sebastian Construction Group built a private home library with the presence of an embassy and the warmth of a home. Civilization seems protected in this architecturally significant home library.

Spinning in Control
A floating circular staircase of steel and walnut in a concrete structure set on a cliff demonstrate solidity, engineering, and precision of the work of Sebastian Construction Group. With confidence, the late architect Bill Booziotis designed this magnificent staircase to project a sense of lightness. He knew he could push the boundaries and design of this remarkable modern house overlooking the Trinity River, knowing the construction was in good hands with Sebastian.

A Preston Hollow hill acts as a pedestal for the simple, dignified façade of this home. This look behind the home reveals an extravagant estate property of terraces, pool, landscaping, and formal gardens. It is a home designed and built for a family and friends to enjoy. Better Home on a Hill
Often an original neighborhood home becomes a point of fondness and familiarity. While it is always disappointing to see a historic home torn down, it is devastating to see something generic, but only larger, replace it. This home on a prominent Preston Hollow hill quelled the concerns. It was interesting to see how a new home sited in the same way as the old home and in a style somewhat similar to the earlier home so quickly gained the affection of the neighborhood. People respond to good architecture and quality. Even from the distance, the elegant construction by the Sebastian Construction Group conveys the excellence of an architecturally significant home.

Personal Gallery and Home
The origin of great museum collections often begins in the home. Margaret McDermott’s Impressionist art collection is a good example. For years her family, friends, students, and local and international art patrons saw her art in her Scott Lyons designed Texas Modern Home. Now the DMA is able to share her art she bequeathed to the museum. Pictured is another home of an art patron who loves architecture and art. It is also an example of how the Sebastian Construction Group was able to help create the warmth of a home and the stark refinement of an art gallery. Dallas is fortunate to have many private art collections and home art galleries that are destinations for art patrons from around the world.

A 100 year tradition
The Spanish Colonial architectural influence permeates Highland Park. This architecture will always be anchored by the Fooshee & Cheek architect-designed Highland Park Village and the homes they designed in Highland Park. Other architects like Hal Thomson and C.D. Hill also contributed to Spanish Colonial design. Sebastian Construction Group is responsible for creating the 1920s historic detailing. This well designed home makes an architectural statement while still submitting to the gracious look of Highland Park estate homes on Beverly Drive.

Origin of Texas Modern
David Williams said that he wanted to combine the modernism of Europe with the architectural roots of Texas. He succeeded. While gradually the tenets of Texas Modernism were introduced in his earlier Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, and Louisiana style homes, the home he designed on McFarlin Boulevard in University Park became the Texas Modern visual starting place for an architectural tradition that has flourished for 90 years.

Alley divides New Urbanist from Urban Forest
The differing sensibilities of urban residents could not be more apparent than those on both sides of this alley. On one side are the New Urbanists that favor density over trees. They built two-story backyard rental houses (granny flats) wider than their primary Prairie Style home. They removed all the old growth pecan trees in place in the process. Further, to eradicate the naturally seeded trumpet vines that profusely propagated, these property owners sprayed the entire back fence line with RoundUp. One of the homeowners even installed a strip of crushed concrete along the alley to impede any growth of wild flowers or weeds. To avoid any contact with an urban alley, these New Urbanists all elected to put their garbage bins out in front of their house once a week rather than have their trash picked up in the alley as the original 1905 development intended. On the other side of the alley, the neighbors treat the alley as a transition from the layers of trees in their backyards to this service street. On this side, the blooming crape myrtles, flowering orange trumpet vines, bamboo, overhanging cedar trees, and arching pecan trees, soften an urban edge and make it a wonderful hunting ground for birds, butterflies, and bees. On one side of the alley is the disciplined, dispassionate approach of property owners desiring urban density and suburban sterility, and on the other side are neighbors who prefer the natural fecundity and messy edge of an urban forest.

1960s Modern Turns Corner
A historical challenge of architecture is how to gracefully and proportionally wrap columns around a building. One of my favorite solutions is the one provided by Philip Johnson when he designed this 1960s modern home in Preston Hollow. The concave arched columns provide a lightness and grace to the architecture. This modern home is also a good example of a collaboration with an excellent architectural firm, Bodron+Fruit, and an excellent contractor, Sebastian Construction Group. Together they were able to preserve, burnish, and exalt the original and current architecture culminating in this 21st century architectural success. This is another example of Sebastian Construction Group’s contribution to architecturally significant homes.

West Texas View
What a better place to remind one that they are in West Texas than in the four-story high observation room looking over the West Texas horizon. This modern home was designed by Turner Boaz and built by the Sebastian Construction Group in West Texas. Both the architect and contractor have built many luxury modern and traditional homes in the city. Here they collaborated to bring the precision of construction and design and the quality of materials to a home that contributes to West Texas landscape.
